9 Tips for Boating with Pets

There is nothing better than spending the day out on the water, except maybe being able to spend that time with your furry companion. Most dogs enjoy the water – unless that water is used for a bath! Dogs have become part of the family, and while we want to bring them with us everywhere, we also want to make sure they are safe. If you do bring your pup with you out on the water, keep in mind these safety tips to ensure a fun-filled day of boating at the Lake of the Ozarks:

1. Invest in a Canine Life Jacket – Most boating stores and pet shops sell life vests for dogs. Although dogs know how to swim, fatigue can cause even the most experienced dogs to drown. Even if your dog doesn’t go swimming, having a life jacket on them is a good idea in case they go overboard.

2. Have a Plan in Place for If They Go Overboard – Accidents happen, so have a plan in case the dog falls overboard, or even jumps off the boat. Make sure everyone on board knows what the plan is to save time in case it has to go into action.

3. Bring Sunscreen – Just like we need sunscreen, some dogs need sunscreen as well. Short haired breeds, such as boxers or any light haired dog, needs protection from the sun.

4. Be Prepared for Accidents – Your dog is going to need a place to relieve himself. If you plan on being out in the water for any length of time, bring lots of paper towels, pet waste bags and cleaning products. Also, be prepared that your dog may become seasick, especially if they are new to boating.

5. Bring a First Aid Kit – Make sure you bring a stocked first aid kit with you, not only for yourself, but for your pet as well. The Humane Society has a list of items that you should keep in your pet’s first-aid kit at all times. If your dog is on any medication, do not forget to bring those out with you too.

6. Keep Your Dog Hydrated – It is important to make sure your dog does not overheat by making sure they have plenty of water. Be sure there is also a place available where they can get some shade.

7. Keep Their First Time Short – It is a good idea to keep your dog’s first boat outing brief so they are able to get used to being out on the water. If they do become sea sick, talk to your vet to see if there is something that can help them out on future trips.

8. Visit the Boat Before Going Out – If your dog is new to the boating world, have them visit the boat before taking off onto the water. It would be a good idea to bring a toy or blanket they use frequently so they have something familiar with them.

9. Use Your Best Judgement – Always use common sense when your dog is on board. Block off areas that are slippery, where your dog could fall. Always know where your dog is at while on board, so you are aware if he needs your help.

Boating with your pups can make the experience even more enjoyable, but it is important that you keep them safe while on the water. If you are looking for a boat – new or previously used – come to the largest boat dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks. Iguana Boat Sales has the perfect boat to meet all your needs. Should You Buy a New or Used Boat?

When you decide to purchase a boat from the premiere boat dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks, there are a few questions that usually come to mind. One of those questions could be ‘should I buy a new or pre-owned boat?’ That’s a tough question to answer, especially for a first-time boat buyer, so Iguana Boat Sales has put together a list of some advantages and disadvantages of buying new vs. used boats.

Advantages to Buying New

  • You can buy exactly what you want. When buying a new boat, you have the option of the design, style, features and gears. For the most part, you can choose what layout, extras, upholstery colors and, even on some boats, you can choose the hull color you want.
  • You’ll have the manufacturer’s warranty. Just like with cars, boats will occasionally break down or have issues. If anything does go wrong, you are entitled to all the warranty coverage and manufacturer’s support.
  • When buying a new boat at the largest boat dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks, you will have support, not just when you buy the boat, but throughout the years of ownership.

Disadvantages to Buying New

  • The biggest disadvantage to buying a new boat is cost. Similar used boats could be cheaper than the new versions.
  • Unless you are buying a stock boat, you may have to wait for your boat to be built, shipped and delivered.
  • Depreciation is also a big disadvantage to buying a new boat. Similar to buying a car, the minute you purchase it, it becomes “used,” and therefore the value drops significantly.

Advantages to Buying Used

  • Buying a used boat is much cheaper than buying a new boat. The previous owners would have covered the depreciation cost, meaning you are buying the boat at a lower price. Sometimes with pre-owned boats, the seller is willing to trade for their boat.
  • Any initial issues in the boat or motor have likely been dealt with, although you may hire a marine surveyor, to look over the boat prior to purchase.
  • When buying a used boat, you are looking at the exact boat you are purchasing, which means any test drive will be on the boat you’ll potentially own. Also, you do not have to wait to own it, you could theoretically take it out on the water the day you buy it.

Disadvantages to Buying Used

  • Used boats may require more maintenance. Even with a good survey, there could possibly be unforeseen problems. In addition, the older a boat is, the more general wear and tear it will have.
  • Often times used boats do not come with warranties or service support. However, Iguana Boat Sales does have a service department if anything does go wrong with the pre-owned or brokerage boat you bought.
  • You may not know the full history of the boat. If you are buying a used boat from anyone other than the first owner, then it is possible that something has happened to the boat that the current owner doesn’t know about.

Iguana Observes National Safe Boating Week: May 21-27, 2016

Boating at the Lake of the Ozarks can be a thrilling way to spend the day on the water. By following proper boating safety measures, you can ensure your trip is fun and accident free. National Safe Boating Week is observed May 21 - 27, 2016. The National Weather Service has partnered with the National Safe Boating Council to help promote safe boating practices. In observance of National Safe Boating Week, Iguana Boat Sales wants to emphasize these things that could save your life the next time you and your family are out on the water:

Do Not Boat Under the Influence

The effects of alcohol while operating a watercraft can be even more hazardous on the water than on land. Boating under the influence (BUI) of drugs or alcohol affects judgement, vision, balance, and coordination. These impairments can increase the risk of being in a boating accident, which could cause harm to the passenger and boat operator. Alcohol contributes to a third of all recreational boating fatalities.

Pay Attention to the Weather Forecast

Weather conditions can change suddenly, catching boaters off guard and creating hazardous conditions. Boaters should take particular note of any current weather advisories, storm warnings, high winds, as well as pay attention to the extended forecast.

Wear Life Jackets

Wearing a life jacket is one of the most effective and simple life-saving strategies for safe recreational boating. Boats are required to have on board a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket for every passenger on their watercraft.  Today, life jackets come in many sizes, are lightweight, and comfortable for any boating activity.

Have a Fire Extinguisher On Board Your Vessel

Boats are required to carry U.S. Coast Guard approved, marine-type fire extinguishers, in case of a fire from the engines or the fuel system. The boater shouldn't have to travel more than half the length of their boat to reach the fire extinguisher. Fire extinguishers should be inspected by the boater to ensure they are properly charged, stored, and undamaged.

Thunderstorm Safety

Thunderstorms can be frightening to a boat operator and its passengers. They develop suddenly and bring strong, gusty winds, lightening, and torrential downpours, which can turn a pleasurable day on the lake into a nightmare. All thunderstorms generally produce lightening and a strike to a vessel can be catastrophic, especially if it results in fire or a loss of electronics. If your boat doesn't have a cabin, stay as low as you can in your boat. If thunderstorms are a possibility, stay in - waiting it out is better than riding it out in a storm.

Iguana Boat Sales Wants You to Have a Safe and Fun Time on the Water

Before getting in your boat at the Lake of the Ozarks, make sure you take the appropriate measures to ensure your safety on the water. By being prepared, paying attention to the weather forecast, and stocking your boat with the required items, your lake outing should not only be safe, but enjoyable! Iguana Boat Sales delivers exceptional value, exclusive selection, and above all outstanding customer service. We have selected some of the best boat brands to offer you the right combination of price, quality, and value. Ways to Prevent a Blown Boat Engine

Some of the best times can be had while boating at the Lake of the Ozarks, that is when your boat is running. Don't let a blown engine ruin your outing on the water. Besides changing the oil, filtering the fuel, and making sure the cooling water is flowing, there are lots of things that can be missed that could affect the health of your boat engines. Here are some things to keep in mind to prevent a blown engine:

Economic Indicators: By ignoring warning buzzers and lights, once they come on you risk a repair bill. Make sure your LED warning lights are not overwhelmed by sunlight or low-watt bulb indicators are located where they can be seen. Be sure you can hear your warning buzzers over your engine, stereo, and wind. Keep in mind that by the time a warning goes off, the problem has already occurred.

In Hot Water: A surefire way to guarantee your engine overheats is by installing your thermostat backwards, where the heat-sensing part is located on the wrong side. This is actually a common mistake, even some pros are guilty of it.

Unusual Noises: A squealing sound can indicate a belt is loose. A metallic tapping that keeps time with engine rpm means your valves, lifters, or rocker arms are having trouble. Grinding and grating metal could mean a water pump bearing is shot. If your exhaust gets louder and has a higher pitch, there's probably less cooling water running through it.

Antifreeze Meltdown: If you do not use a mixture of antifreeze and water in your sealed cooling system, you could risk overheating the engine. Undiluted antifreeze boils at a higher temperature than water, therefore retaining more heat.

Strong Odor: A healthy engine has a distinct smell that most boaters recognize. The stench of burnt rubber could come from a number of mechanical areas. Burnt oil could mean the engine was run hard, or if it's a strong odor, there's likely an oil leak dripping on the hot engine. A sweet aroma could indicate leaking antifreeze. And a smell like burnt hair could be an electrical short.

Cheap Oil: You will not be saving money by using an off-brand oil. Better oils are uniform and consistently meet standards. The difference between cheap oils and the ones offered by engine manufacturers are very insignificant compared to the repair costs from using bargain oil.

Engine Vibration: Various vibrations can result in a number of things, including your prop's blades are bent or your prop needs balancing. When the whole boat rumbles and shakes at all speeds, the engine and shaft are likely out of alignment.

Oil Changes: Completely replace the old oil with the new. Another option is to change your oil more
frequently so that the oil left behind never has a chance to get bad.

Owner's Manual: The instruction manual has a purpose. Our engines would last a lot longer if they weren't neglected. By referring to them once in awhile, you might save some wear and tear on your boat's engine.

Iguana Boat Sales will Keep Your Boat Running Smoothly This Summer

By maintaining your boat at the Lake of the Ozarks regularly, being in tune with warning indicators, as well as being familiar with your owner's manual, you can prevent engine trouble. Iguana Boat Sales has technicians that are trained and certified to service your watercraft. Whether you need routine maintenance or an engine rebuild, our staff will have you back on the water enjoying our beautiful lake in no time. We currently have 3 service locations at this time.
