In 2005, Nautic Global Group became the parent company of Rinker introducing an entirely new generation of cruisers and Rinker became the first sterndrive boat builder to offer a wake tower and water sports package on its sport boats. Today Rinker exports boats to over 40 countries while remaining true to its Mid-western heritage. Plan Ahead When Boating with Kids

The boating season will soon be here and everyone will be loading up their boats at the Lake of the Ozarks for a day of fun. Many families will be spending time on the water swimming, sunbathing, and dining. This can take the better part of a day, especially if you are planning on renting a boat from Iguana Watersports to do some water-skiing and other water activities. If you are venturing out with kids, you will want to do some planning. Here are some things to take into consideration so that you can be prepared:

Kids Get Bored Easily

Most adults love a long leisurely boat ride on the water, soaking up the sun and the scenery. However, kids can get bored and soon will want to move on to some action. Make sure youplan to make the day family-friendly by getting in the water at some point to do some swimming, water-skiing, tubing, or paddleboarding. If you think your cruise will be longer than the younger ones can handle, pack some fun activities to keep them busy on the boat.

Make Sure Your Boat is Stocked Up

In addition to necessary items, such as life jackets and a first aid kit, keep the boat stocked with extra sunglasses, sunscreen, and towels. You never know when you might forget something and it is not convenient to go back and get it when you are on the middle of the lake. Extra clothes and swimsuits for younger kids can come in handy too. Stock lots of snacks and drinks for an extended stay on the water.

Come Up With a Plan B

On holidays and busy weekends, come up with an alternative plan in case the waterfront restaurants are overly crowded or the main channel is too choppy. Kids can get impatient waiting, or you may just be uncomfortable having them out in the lake when the water is so rough. Get out earlier in the day and find a quiet cove to do some swimming or paddle boarding.

Remember Safety First

Always have younger children wear their life jackets. Make sure to check the weather forecast first before heading out and listen to a radio on board. Don't take any chances. Head back if you see any developing weather. Having waterproof clothing on board will come in handy if you get caught in bad weather. Double check that all of your flares and visual distress signals are working properly.

Get Your Boat Dewinterized and Back in the Water

The season is almost here and you are probably anxious to get your boat ready for the water again.  If your boat was properly winterized for the cold weather months, de-winterizing should be easy. You will want to make sure everything is in working order by getting a full inspection of some vital parts. Iguana Boat Sales can do a full inspection and de-winterize your boat to ensure safety and fun on the water. Here is a list of parts we check when de-winterizing your boat:

We check Your Engine from Top to Bottom

A thorough check of the engine is essential when de-winterizing your boat, including an oil change. Long periods of inactivity causes the oil to drain down over a period of time. We check all of your oil including the out-drive oil as well. We make sure your engine is clean and ready for you to start the engine. We also replace the oil filter if needed and put the right oil additive in to keep your engine clean and corrosion free.

The Battery

During de-winterization, we check the battery and top off fluids if necessary. During the season, you should check your battery water level often…a dry battery will not hold a charge. We can use a battery tester to check the amps and volts. If the battery does not hold a charge, we have replacement batteries available. We will also clean any corrosion from the battery terminals if needed

The Cooling System

We will fill your cooling system to the proper level. If it was not drained for the winter, we can replace the cooling fluid with fresh coolant. We also check all hoses and empty the strainer.

The Gas Tank

While the cooling system is drained to winterize a boat, the fuel tank should have been filled up to prevent moisture from forming. Freezing temperatures can easily crack fuel lines. We will change your fuel filter if needed. If you did not put an additive in the gas to prevent water contamination and fuel separation before winter, then we can drain the old gas from the fuel tank and make sure a quality non-ethanol containing additive is suggested to prevent damage from E10 gas.

The Distributor and Belts

We will clean and replace the distributor as needed and ensure all connections are hooked up properly.

We check all of your boat's belts and replace any worn belts. Belts should give slightly, but not significantly. If we see any soot near the pulleys, it also means some wear/tear and we can replace any that may give you trouble later in the season.

Tips for Boating Safety at Lake of the Ozarks

Boating season at Lake of the Ozarks is upon us and one of the most important considerations when getting back on the water is boating safety. Whether you have your own boat or will be using the best boat rental company at Lake of the Ozarks, safety on the water is the obligation of all boaters. For a safe outing, here are some tips to be a responsible captain:

Get Educated and Licensed

If you are new to boating and plan on renting or purchasing a boat from a boat dealer at Lake of the Ozarks this season, there are a few requirements for operating a vessel on a Missouri lake. Every person born after January 1, 1984 is required to possess a boating safety identification card issued by The Missouri State Water Patrol. The safety education course can be taken online or classes are offered in Sunrise Beach. You do not have to be a Missouri resident to get licensed.

Before You Leave the Dock

Prepare a checklist of the items that you need on your boat before you embark. Here is a list of recommended items to have on your boat before you leave the dock:
  • Have enough Coast Guard approved life jackets accessible for each person that will be on the boat. Missouri law requires children under the age of seven to be wearing a life jacket whenever they are on a boat, unless they are in a cabin area of a cruiser or houseboat.
  • If your vessel is longer than 16', have a throw-able device.
  • Carry a sound producing device, such as a horn in case of emergency.
  • Make sure your boat is equipped with fire extinguishers.
  • From sunset to sunrise, navigational lights are required. Double check these are in working order if you plan to go out after dark.
  • Your boat registration should be current and kept on board.
  • The boating identification card should be kept in your possession while operating a boat.

Be Smart On the Water

Boating is easily one of the most popular activities at Lake of the Ozarks and needs to be taken seriously. Unfortunately, lack of responsibility can lead to boating incidents and drownings. Boating while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs and alcohol are violations of the law and can bring some serious consequences.

Know Your Missouri Boating Responsibilities

To stay up to date on laws governing boating and safe boat operation, obtain a copy of The Handbook of Missouri Laws and Responsibilities. This is the official boating handbook provided by the Missouri Water Patrol. The booklet can be purchased from the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Topics include:
  • Vessel Basics
  • Navigation Rules
  • Nighttime Navigation
  • Emergencies
  • Personal Watercraft (PWCs)
  • Boating Laws and Regulations
  • Required Equipment
  • Skiing
  • And much more
