The 411 on the Boater's Safety Certification

Whether you own your own boat or you're renting from the best watercraft rental company at the Lake of the Ozarks, all boat operators are required to successfully pass the Missouri Boater Education class and test. Safety is the foundation for a fun day out on the water. The Lake of the Ozarks best boat dealer has all the information you need to know to obtain your boater certification card. However, even if you are not required to obtain a boater certification card, it is never a bad idea to brush up on boating safety, especially if you have just purchased a new boat from Iguana Boat Sales.

Who is required to have a boat certification card?

The Missouri State Highway Patrol Water Patrol Division requires that any person born after January 1, 1984 must successfully complete a NASBLA (National Association of State Boating Law Administrators) approved boating education course before operating any motorized vessel on Missouri lakes (including rentals). The law went into effect for Missouri residents on January 1, 2005, and January 1, 2006, for non-Missouri residents.

How do I get my boater certification?

First, you must take a NASBLA approved course. This includes courses administered by the Missouri State Highway Patrol - Water Patrol Division, US Coast Guard, US Power Squadrons and Boat-Ed (an online boater education website). The Water Patrol Division offers classes around the state of Missouri at various times and locations. To find class times and locations, visit https://www.mshp.dps.missouri.gov/WP02Web/app/safetyEdClasses.

Who can take the boater education course?

Anyone wanting to operate a boat or personal watercraft should take a boater education course. There is no age limit on who can take the course, however, that person should be able to follow the course material and understand its meaning. Missouri law states that boat operators must be 14 years or older unless accompanied by an adult. Anyone born after January 1, 1984, also must carry their boater certification card and a photo ID.

Is a boater education card needed to rent a boat/PWC?

Yes, the law applies to anyone operating the vessel whether it is owned or rented.

Are old cards still valid?

Yes, old cardstock cards are still valid, however, it is recommended to laminate the card or place it in a waterproof container to keep it from getting wet. Please note, all records related to education courses prior to 1999 were purged. If you have lost your card and it was completed prior to 1999, it is required to take another course and purchase a new card.

Safe Boating

Although it is not boating season, now is the perfect time to brush up on your boating safety and complete the boating education courses, if you have not done so already. We love our customers and their safety is a priority for us. The best boat dealership at the Lake of the Ozarks recommends that everyone take education classes prior to purchasing and operating a boat. We want to make sure that when you purchase a boat from Iguana Boat Sales that you can enjoy it for years to comes, which means practicing safe boating and learning the rules of the water.

How Do You Store Your Boat During Winter?

The weather is still beautiful, but whether we want to believe it or not, the boating season is slowly coming to an end. There are a few weeks left that you can spend out on the water, but many people have started to get their boats ready for the winter season. If you have recently purchased a boat at the Lake of the Ozarks, you may be wondering how to store it, and what the process is like during the off-season. Iguana Boat Sales is here to answer all of your questions! The best boat dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks takes a look boat storage options, both on land and in the water for you.

Covers

Any boat that is being stored outside, whether it is on land or in water, should have a cover to protect the boat against any sort of weather. There are several different types of covers boat owners can use:

Canvas - This is a traditional method of protecting boats in the winter season. Canvas is ideal for covering boats, as it is a breathable fabric. This allows excess moisture, which could cause mildew, to escape.

Shrink Wrap - This is a more modern technique, but has become quite popular for covering boats. Webbing is put over the boat to support a thin film of plastic. Heat from a propane gun causes the plastic to shrink tightly around the boat. Although shrink wrap is very efficient in protecting boats, they cannot be reused. Once the season is over, the film is cut off the boat.

Plastic Tarps - Using a plastic tarp and a few pieces of wood, owners can build a temporary tent to protect their boat. The covering is kept in place by tying it to the boat. Plastic tarps allow good airflow, which can help prevent mildew. However, they are not very durable and can only last one season before needing to be replaced. In addition, the tarp or cords used to tie it down could rub against the hull causing the gel coat to chaff.

Land Storage

Dry storage - This is a great option for several types of boats such as runabouts, performance boats, pontoons, and cruisers. There are a couple of options. If it makes sense for you financially, you can opt for dry rack storage while sometimes the more economical choice is keeping it on a trailer.

Dry Rack - Most dry rack buildings are capable of storing boats up to 26'; however, some marinas have the equipment to lift and store larger boats as long as they meet the height requirements. Storage fees incur during the months your boat is stored. Many rack storage facilities offer a variety of services, such as boat wash-downs, along with winterization and shrink wrapping at the end of the year. Make sure to inquire about additional costs!

Trailer - If you're a do-it-yourself-er and storing your boat on your own property is possible, loading and storing your boat on a trailer is less expensive than paying the fees to have it stored at a marina. However, several marinas do offer on or off-site storage locations for boats on trailers and, for a monthly fee you can utilize their services. Keep in mind, when your boat is stored outside it is at the mercy of the weather.

Water Storage

There are two ways to store your boat at the dock. In or above the water. And the advantage to water storage is the early start on the spring boating season! You may have a boat lift to utilize during the offseason or in some cases, your boat might stay in the water year-round.

Boat-lifts - This option offers you the ability to store your boat high and dry yet ready for use in minutes, helping you stretch the boating season as long as possible. The disadvantage to storing on a lift at the Lake of the Ozarks is the unpredictability of our winters. Heavy snow or ice can damage the lift so it is important to make sure the lift is well maintained and used correctly.

In water - If you plan to leave your boat in the water year-round, it is recommended that you inspect your boat once a week throughout the coldest time of the year. If you store your boat at a marina there may be a de-icing system in place to ensure ice does not accumulate on your boat. With proper winterization and a cover, this is an option.

Iguana Boat Sales knows how important boats are and we want to help protect your investment through the winter. As the best boat dealership at the Lake of the Ozarks, we carry one of the largest selections of new and used boats for sale at the Lake of the Ozarks. Stop by and let us help you find the perfect boat for you and your family.

9 Tips for Boating with Pets

There is nothing better than spending the day out on the water, except maybe being able to spend that time with your furry companion. Most dogs enjoy the water – unless that water is used for a bath! Dogs have become part of the family, and while we want to bring them with us everywhere, we also want to make sure they are safe. If you do bring your pup with you out on the water, keep in mind these safety tips to ensure a fun-filled day of boating at the Lake of the Ozarks:

1. Invest in a Canine Life Jacket – Most boating stores and pet shops sell life vests for dogs. Although dogs know how to swim, fatigue can cause even the most experienced dogs to drown. Even if your dog doesn’t go swimming, having a life jacket on them is a good idea in case they go overboard.

2. Have a Plan in Place for If They Go Overboard – Accidents happen, so have a plan in case the dog falls overboard, or even jumps off the boat. Make sure everyone on board knows what the plan is to save time in case it has to go into action.

3. Bring Sunscreen – Just like we need sunscreen, some dogs need sunscreen as well. Short haired breeds, such as boxers or any light haired dog, needs protection from the sun.

4. Be Prepared for Accidents – Your dog is going to need a place to relieve himself. If you plan on being out in the water for any length of time, bring lots of paper towels, pet waste bags and cleaning products. Also, be prepared that your dog may become seasick, especially if they are new to boating.

5. Bring a First Aid Kit – Make sure you bring a stocked first aid kit with you, not only for yourself, but for your pet as well. The Humane Society has a list of items that you should keep in your pet’s first-aid kit at all times. If your dog is on any medication, do not forget to bring those out with you too.

6. Keep Your Dog Hydrated – It is important to make sure your dog does not overheat by making sure they have plenty of water. Be sure there is also a place available where they can get some shade.

7. Keep Their First Time Short – It is a good idea to keep your dog’s first boat outing brief so they are able to get used to being out on the water. If they do become sea sick, talk to your vet to see if there is something that can help them out on future trips.

8. Visit the Boat Before Going Out – If your dog is new to the boating world, have them visit the boat before taking off onto the water. It would be a good idea to bring a toy or blanket they use frequently so they have something familiar with them.

9. Use Your Best Judgement – Always use common sense when your dog is on board. Block off areas that are slippery, where your dog could fall. Always know where your dog is at while on board, so you are aware if he needs your help.

Boating with your pups can make the experience even more enjoyable, but it is important that you keep them safe while on the water. If you are looking for a boat – new or previously used – come to the largest boat dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks. Iguana Boat Sales has the perfect boat to meet all your needs. Visit our showroom in Osage Beach today, or view our inventory on our website.

3 More Reasons to Buy a Pontoon from Iguana

Bringing your family to the Lake of the Ozarks is an absolute blast! We gave you 3 reasons to buy a pontoon boat in our last blog, and if that wasn't enough – we have more. Read on to discover 3 more reasons buying a pontoon at Iguana Boat Sales is the best option for your family.

26' Aqua Patio 240 SLC

#4. A Pontoon is a Boat that will Last

Pontoon boats are great boats because they are built to last. As your boat ages and begins to show signs of wear and tear, you can easily find parts and furniture that fit almost any pontoon.

Pontoon boats have an aluminum hull, which makes them particularly tough in shallower water. Traditional fiberglass v-bottom hulls can get torn or punctured by rocks and obstacles in the water.

#5. Plenty of Space to Lay Out and Get Comfortable

As we mentioned before, pontoons are perfect for bringing your friends out on the water. There's plenty of room for people to lay out and tan while others can wait for their turn on the tube in the back. With ample seating, no one will feel cramped for space.

27' Sanpan 2500 FE Bar
Additionally, many pontoon owners bring accessories to enjoy a longer stay out on the water, like small portable grills and larger coolers... tough to do on smaller ski boats.

#6. Storage

If you are new to boating, this may seem like a minor benefit, but if you’ve been boating for any amount of time, you know how nice it is to have ample storage on the boat. Inevitably, you’ll invite people onto your boat who will bring the full ice chest, bags of clothing and “extras”, blankets for the chilly evenings, and all sorts of things. On most boats, this loads up every inch of empty space and makes for a cramped evening. On a pontoon boat, there is storage for just about everything your guests decide to bring.

Iguana Carries the Best Pontoon Boats on the Lake of the Ozarks!

No matter how you spend your time on the water at Lake of the Ozarks, Iguana Boat Sales can help you take it to the next level! Enjoy taking your friends and family out for a day on the water with the Aqua Patio 240 SLC or the SanPan 2500. With seating for 10+ people, these pontoons are a surefire way to rev up your summer fun and take in everything the Lake of the Ozarks has to offer.

3 Things to Consider When Buying/Renting a Boat From Iguana

At the best boat dealership at Lake of the Ozarks, we also have boat rental options available! You can check out your renting options at www.iguanawatersports.com. Many people wonder if it’s better to rent your Lake of the Ozarks boat, or to buy one. What determines whether you should rent or buy a boat? Here is a list of things to consider if you are stuck between buying and renting a boat at Lake of the Ozarks!

Party Boat at Iguana Watersports

How Often Do You Get on the Water?

If you are a seasoned Lake of the Ozarks' veteran, you'll know that the boating season generally falls between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, give or take a few weeks. If you get on the water weekly, renting a boat can get costly. At the same time, if you are only able to get out on the water a few times during the season, purchasing a boat can be a sunk cost. You'll spend more time with upkeeps such as winterization/de-winterization than on the water, making renting a much more cost-effective option.

Where do you get on the Water?

If you are an exclusive Lake of the Ozarks' boater, then owning your own boat may be best. You know the seasons, and when the best boating events occur. Buying a boat and keeping it stored at the Lake may be your best option. If you wish to have a boat that can handle a larger amount of people than your boat can safely handle or want to get experienced on the water before purchasing a boat, then renting may be for you.  Hauling a boat and trailer to and from your home or the marina it's kept at is an often overlooked cost of buying a boat. By utilizing Iguana Watersports at Lake of the Ozarks, you can show up, rent the boat that suits you and the occasion, and launch off into a great time.

2014 Hurricane Deck Boat

The Price Difference

Buying a boat is similar to buying any other vehicle. There are costs such as the boat mortgage payment, fuel, insurance, and maintenance/storage costs. This is a recreational vehicle that will need to be maintained in the off-season unless you have proper storage for it at home. Averaged over the year, these costs can seem high for someone who doesn't get on the water very often.

Rinker 310 Express Cruiser
On the other side, renting a boat costs significantly less. You pay for the boat and the fuel you use, and a deposit in case incidents occur. That's it, enjoy your watercraft for the rental period and when you're done, it's turned in. No hassle, not extra costs.

Rent or Buy Your Next Boat at Iguana!

Renting vs. buying a boat at Lake of the Ozarks is highly debated - which one should you choose? We recommend stopping by our showroom and talking with our experienced sales staff. They will listen to your goals and give you the best advice on whether you should rent or if it's time to consider getting that Rinker 310 Express Cruiser you've been dreaming of. Our team will take their time and get to know you while recommending the best available options to fit your needs. Come down to Iguana Boat Sales and let our team handle the rest!

If you have decided on renting a boat this season, visit www.iguanawatersports.com to see the great selection of watercraft we have available. You can choose from one of our fantastic speedboats for waterskiing, our top fishing boats, a party boat for the large crowd, or one of our PWC’s to cruise the lake in style. The season is not that far away, so contact us now for your reservation!

3 Reasons to Buy a Pontoon from Iguana

Aqua Patio Pontoons are perfect for your family outings!
Does your family love getting out on the water? Maybe you want to invite your friends down for a weekend of lounging and laying out in the cove. A pontoon boat may be the perfect option for you! With plenty of legroom and passenger/cargo room, a pontoon can make a good weekend with your friends and family even better! The Lake of the Ozarks' best marine dealership sells the best brands in pontoons - Aqua Patio, SanPan, and SweetWater. Here are 3 of the best reasons to get a pontoon for your family this summer!

1. Tons of Room

Let's face it, young children never sit still! Little kids want space to run around and be kids. On a traditional boat, that doesn’t make for an enjoyable trip. On a pontoon, there is room for them to move, couches everywhere and sometimes even a table for them to play on with their toys. As your kids get older, they can invite their friends out on the pontoon and you'll have plenty of room! No more worries about what your teenager is doing, they'll be on the boat with you.

2. Do You Like to Fish/Ski?

What do you want your boat to do? If “a little bit of everything” sounds like your answer, then the pontoon is the best choice! The platform of a pontoon boat adds the perfect space to fish from. The boat is stable so it doesn’t spook fish and has ample room to walk all around the boat to fish in different locations. A pontoon can even have a full enclosure, with a heater inside to fish through the cold winter months. For skiing, a pontoon boat fits nearly as many people as you want to invite. With all the guests on board, watching for a downed skier is much easier.

3. Pontoons are Easy to Maintain!

Pontoons are made of aluminum, which helps prevent tearing and ripping. Boating on the Lake of the Ozarks brings relatively few risks to your boat, but shallow waters, especially when launching and removing a boat, put your boat at risk. A dent is much easier to repair than a tear or hole, and your boat isn't immediately out of commission for the repair.

Cleaning a pontoon is much easier too! Ski boats and luxury yachts at the Lake of the Ozarks come with a gel coating that needs to be wiped down to keep that sleek and pristine look. Pontoon boats, made of aluminum, can be loaded onto the trailer and driven away - a pontoon boat looks good air dried!

26' SweetWater Premium Edition 240-4

Pontoons are the perfect watercraft for families and friends at the Lake. Iguana Boat Sales carries the best pontoon boats at the Lake of the Ozarks because we understand the importance of having a great time on the water. Come to our boat showroom and look for the boat that fits you and your family, and leave with a watercraft that will make the summertime at the Lake of the Ozarks even more fun!
