Plan Ahead When Boating with Kids

The boating season will soon be here and everyone will be loading up their boats at the Lake of the Ozarks for a day of fun. Many families will be spending time on the water swimming, sunbathing, and dining. This can take the better part of a day, especially if you are planning on renting a boat from Iguana Watersports to do some water-skiing and other water activities. If you are venturing out with kids, you will want to do some planning. Here are some things to take into consideration so that you can be prepared:

Kids Get Bored Easily

Most adults love a long leisurely boat ride on the water, soaking up the sun and the scenery. However, kids can get bored and soon will want to move on to some action. Make sure youplan to make the day family-friendly by getting in the water at some point to do some swimming, water-skiing, tubing, or paddleboarding. If you think your cruise will be longer than the younger ones can handle, pack some fun activities to keep them busy on the boat.

Make Sure Your Boat is Stocked Up

In addition to necessary items, such as life jackets and a first aid kit, keep the boat stocked with extra sunglasses, sunscreen, and towels. You never know when you might forget something and it is not convenient to go back and get it when you are on the middle of the lake. Extra clothes and swimsuits for younger kids can come in handy too. Stock lots of snacks and drinks for an extended stay on the water.

Come Up With a Plan B

On holidays and busy weekends, come up with an alternative plan in case the waterfront restaurants are overly crowded or the main channel is too choppy. Kids can get impatient waiting, or you may just be uncomfortable having them out in the lake when the water is so rough. Get out earlier in the day and find a quiet cove to do some swimming or paddle boarding.

Remember Safety First

Always have younger children wear their life jackets. Make sure to check the weather forecast first before heading out and listen to a radio on board. Don't take any chances. Head back if you see any developing weather. Having waterproof clothing on board will come in handy if you get caught in bad weather. Double check that all of your flares and visual distress signals are working properly.
