Should You Buy a New or Used Boat?

When you decide to purchase a boat from the best boat dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks, there are a few questions that usually come to mind. One of the main questions you may ask yourself is whether you want to purchase a new or used boat. That’s a tough question to answer, especially for a first-time boat buyer, so Iguana Boat Sales has put together a list of some advantages and disadvantages of buying new vs. used boats.

Advantages of Buying New

When you buy new, you can buy exactly what you want. When buying a new boat, you have the option of the design, style, features, and gears. For the most part, you can choose what layout, extras, upholstery colors and on some boats, you can even choose the hull color.

You’ll have the manufacturer’s warranty. Just like with cars, boats will occasionally break down or have issues. If anything does go wrong, you are entitled to all the warranty coverage and manufacturer’s support.

When buying a new boat at the largest boat dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks, you will have support, not just when you buy the boat, but throughout the years of ownership.

Disadvantages to Buying New

The biggest disadvantage to buying a new boat is cost. Similar used boats could be cheaper than the newer versions.

Unless you are buying a stock boat, you may have to wait for your boat to be built, shipped, and delivered.

Depreciation is also a big disadvantage to buying a new boat. Similar to buying a car, the minute you purchase it, it becomes “used,” and therefore the value drops significantly.

Advantages of Buying Used

Buying a used boat is much cheaper than buying a new boat. The previous owners would have covered the depreciation cost, meaning you are buying the boat at a lower price. Sometimes with pre-owned boats, the seller is willing to trade for their boat.

Any initial issues in the boat or motor have likely been dealt with, although you may hire a marine surveyor, to look over the boat prior to purchase. When buying a used boat, you are looking at the exact boat you are purchasing. That means that any test drive will be on the boat you’ll potentially own. Also, you do not have to wait to own it, you could theoretically take it out on the water the day you buy it.

Disadvantages to Buying Used

Used boats may require more maintenance. Even with a good survey, there could possibly be unforeseen problems. Another thing to keep in mind is the older a boat, the more general wear and tear it will have.

Often times used boats do not come with warranties or service support. However, Iguana Boat Sales does have a service department if anything does go wrong with the pre-owned or brokerage boat you bought.

You may not know the full history of the boat. If you are buying a used boat from anyone other than the first owner, then it is possible that something has happened to the boat that the current owner doesn’t know about.

Stay Safe This Boating Season

Boating season at Lake of the Ozarks is almost here! Iguana Boat Sales is excited to get back out on the water, but we know that one of the most important considerations when getting back on the water is boating safety. Whether you have your own boat or will be using the best boat rental company at Lake of the Ozarks, safety on the water is the obligation of all boaters. For a safe outing, the best boat dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks has listed some tips to be a responsible captain:

Get Educated and Licensed

If you are new to boating and plan on renting or purchasing a boat from the best boat dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks this season, there are a few requirements for operating a vessel on a Missouri lake. Every person born after January 1, 1984, is required to possess a boating safety identification card issued by The Missouri State Water Patrol. The safety education course can be taken online or classes are offered in Sunrise Beach. You do not have to be a Missouri resident to get licensed.

Before You Leave the Dock

Prepare a checklist of the items that you need on your boat before you take off. Here is a list of recommended items to have on your boat before you leave the dock:
  • Have enough Coast Guard approved life jackets accessible for each person that will be on the boat? Missouri law requires children under the age of seven to be wearing a life jacket whenever they are on a boat unless they are in a cabin area of a cruiser or houseboat.
  • If your vessel is longer than 16', have a throw-able device.
  • Carry a sound producing device, such as a horn in case of emergency.
  • Make sure your boat is equipped with fire extinguishers.
  • From sunset to sunrise, navigational lights are required. Double check these are in working order if you plan to go out after dark.
  • Your boat registration should be current and kept on board.
  • The boating identification card should be kept in your possession while operating a boat.

Be Smart On the Water

Boating is easily one of the most popular activities at Lake of the Ozarks and needs to be taken seriously. Unfortunately, lack of responsibility can lead to boating incidents and drownings. Boating while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs and alcohol are violations of the law and can bring some serious consequences.

Know Your Missouri Boating Responsibilities

To stay up to date on laws governing boating and safe boat operation, obtain a copy of The Handbook of Missouri Laws and Responsibilities. This is the official boating handbook provided by the Missouri Water Patrol. The booklet can be purchased from the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Topics include:

  • Vessel Basics
  • Navigation Rules
  • Nighttime Navigation
  • Emergencies
  • Personal Watercraft (PWCs)
  • Boating Laws and Regulations
  • Required Equipment
  • Skiing
  • And much more
