Fall is Fishing Season

If you want to experience some of the best fishing of the year, then it’s best not to put your boat away when the leaves begin to change colors. Although it can be more challenging, fall provides you with a chance to land some big fish. Fish tend to eat more in the fall in anticipation of winter. This is one of the main reasons that fishing is so good during the fall season. Iguana Boat Sales has put together a list of some of the freshwater fish that anglers are after when the weather begins to cool down. If you want to get out on the Lake to fish but need to upgrade your fishing boat, the best boat dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks can help. Let us help you get out on the water!

Northern Pike

Some people may call it “northern”, “jackfish”, or just “pike”, but one thing that is for sure, fall is the best season to catch them. Pike are stealthy fish and they are patient. They tend to lay and wait until they strike, and they are more aggressive in the fall. Pike have sharp teeth, this allows them to rip through plastic bait – it’s a good idea to make sure you have pliers to remove the lure from a hooked fish. In order to find these fish in the fall, look for aquatic vegetation in deeper water that hasn’t died yet. Pikes are actively looking for cover in the fall.

Where to find: The Northern Pike has a range that is greater than any other freshwater gamefish. Because of this, Pike can be found throughout the northern half of North America including eastern New York, New England, Minnesota, and the Ohio Valley, the Great Lakes basin, and the surrounding states of Nebraska and Missouri.

Largemouth Bass

If you’re on the hunt for some largemouth bass this fall, keep in mind that most of these fish are going to be in shallow water because the lake is cooling off and the water is warmer in the shallow areas. This also means that some of the larger bass that would have been in deeper waters throughout the summer will come closer to the shore. If the water you are fishing in is muddy, you should target water that is no deeper than about four feet. You should also use a lure that is metallic to draw fish in.

Where to find: You can find largemouth bass in many small freshwater lakes, the St. Lawrence, Great Lakes, Hudson Bay (Red River), and Mississippi River basins.

Walleye

During the fall months, Walleyes are hungry as they are preparing for winter. Walleye pray on small baitfish like bluegill and perch. These small baitfish will be close to the shore searching for any cover that may still be there. Because of this, you will have the most luck fishing the shoreline when looking for Walleye fish.

Where to find: The Walleye is native to the central portion of North America, from the Rocky Mountain to the Appalachian Mountain chains, ranging as far south as Arkansas, Mississippi, and Alabama. Lake of the Ozarks is considered one of the best Walleye fishing spots in Missouri.

Lake of the Ozarks is an ideal location for fall fishing. If you’re wanting to get out on the Lake and catch some fish, make sure you stop by Iguana Boat Sales first. It’s important to have the best gear and that includes a fishing boat. The best boat dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks has all different fishing boats to accommodate your needs.
