Iguana Observes National Safe Boating Week: May 21-27, 2016

Boating at the Lake of the Ozarks can be a thrilling way to spend the day on the water. By following proper boating safety measures, you can ensure your trip is fun and accident free. National Safe Boating Week is observed May 21 - 27, 2016. The National Weather Service has partnered with the National Safe Boating Council to help promote safe boating practices. In observance of National Safe Boating Week, Iguana Boat Sales wants to emphasize these things that could save your life the next time you and your family are out on the water:

Do Not Boat Under the Influence

The effects of alcohol while operating a watercraft can be even more hazardous on the water than on land. Boating under the influence (BUI) of drugs or alcohol affects judgement, vision, balance, and coordination. These impairments can increase the risk of being in a boating accident, which could cause harm to the passenger and boat operator. Alcohol contributes to a third of all recreational boating fatalities.

Pay Attention to the Weather Forecast

Weather conditions can change suddenly, catching boaters off guard and creating hazardous conditions. Boaters should take particular note of any current weather advisories, storm warnings, high winds, as well as pay attention to the extended forecast.

Wear Life Jackets

Wearing a life jacket is one of the most effective and simple life-saving strategies for safe recreational boating. Boats are required to have on board a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket for every passenger on their watercraft.  Today, life jackets come in many sizes, are lightweight, and comfortable for any boating activity.

Have a Fire Extinguisher On Board Your Vessel

Boats are required to carry U.S. Coast Guard approved, marine-type fire extinguishers, in case of a fire from the engines or the fuel system. The boater shouldn't have to travel more than half the length of their boat to reach the fire extinguisher. Fire extinguishers should be inspected by the boater to ensure they are properly charged, stored, and undamaged.

Thunderstorm Safety

Thunderstorms can be frightening to a boat operator and its passengers. They develop suddenly and bring strong, gusty winds, lightening, and torrential downpours, which can turn a pleasurable day on the lake into a nightmare. All thunderstorms generally produce lightening and a strike to a vessel can be catastrophic, especially if it results in fire or a loss of electronics. If your boat doesn't have a cabin, stay as low as you can in your boat. If thunderstorms are a possibility, stay in - waiting it out is better than riding it out in a storm.

Ways to Prevent a Blown Boat Engine

Some of the best times can be had while boating at the Lake of the Ozarks, that is when your boat is running. Don't let a blown engine ruin your outing on the water. Besides changing the oil, filtering the fuel, and making sure the cooling water is flowing, there are lots of things that can be missed that could affect the health of your boat engines. Here are some things to keep in mind to prevent a blown engine:

Economic Indicators: By ignoring warning buzzers and lights, once they come on you risk a repair bill. Make sure your LED warning lights are not overwhelmed by sunlight or low-watt bulb indicators are located where they can be seen. Be sure you can hear your warning buzzers over your engine, stereo, and wind. Keep in mind that by the time a warning goes off, the problem has already occurred.

In Hot Water: A surefire way to guarantee your engine overheats is by installing your thermostat backwards, where the heat-sensing part is located on the wrong side. This is actually a common mistake, even some pros are guilty of it.

Unusual Noises: A squealing sound can indicate a belt is loose. A metallic tapping that keeps time with engine rpm means your valves, lifters, or rocker arms are having trouble. Grinding and grating metal could mean a water pump bearing is shot. If your exhaust gets louder and has a higher pitch, there's probably less cooling water running through it.

Antifreeze Meltdown: If you do not use a mixture of antifreeze and water in your sealed cooling system, you could risk overheating the engine. Undiluted antifreeze boils at a higher temperature than water, therefore retaining more heat.

Strong Odor: A healthy engine has a distinct smell that most boaters recognize. The stench of burnt rubber could come from a number of mechanical areas. Burnt oil could mean the engine was run hard, or if it's a strong odor, there's likely an oil leak dripping on the hot engine. A sweet aroma could indicate leaking antifreeze. And a smell like burnt hair could be an electrical short.

Cheap Oil: You will not be saving money by using an off-brand oil. Better oils are uniform and consistently meet standards. The difference between cheap oils and the ones offered by engine manufacturers are very insignificant compared to the repair costs from using bargain oil.

Engine Vibration: Various vibrations can result in a number of things, including your prop's blades are bent or your prop needs balancing. When the whole boat rumbles and shakes at all speeds, the engine and shaft are likely out of alignment.

Oil Changes: Completely replace the old oil with the new. Another option is to change your oil more
frequently so that the oil left behind never has a chance to get bad.

Owner's Manual: The instruction manual has a purpose. Our engines would last a lot longer if they weren't neglected. By referring to them once in awhile, you might save some wear and tear on your boat's engine.

Lake30

Look for Lake30 in our retail store soon. This is a true lake lifestyle brand. After living on a houseboat and loving being on the water, the owners of Lake30 bought countless shirts from every vacation destination, just to be disappointed how stiff and boxy they were. So they started making their own, which became popular with their friends and family. They eventually created Lake30, which simply means, "It's Lake Time!" The brand encompasses some of the most comfortable apparel mixed with fun lake necessities!

Giving Back is a driving force behind Lake30. In addition, to helping numerous local charities, Lake30 selected Canine Companions for Independence as their primary non-profit to honor a one-of-a-kind person and a special dog who inspired them living the Lake30 way...relaxed, simple, happy and always giving back. 10% net profits are donated to Canine Companions for Independence who provide highly trained assistance dogs for children and adults living with disabilities, free of charge, since 1975!
