Stay Safe This Memorial Day Weekend

It’s finally here! After what seemed like an extraordinarily long winter, Memorial Weekend is just days away. At the Lake of the Ozarks, Memorial Day Weekend is one of the busiest boating weekends. Iguana Boat Sales wants to ensure you have a fun and accident-free time this holiday weekend. This year, National Safe Boating Week is May 19th - 25th, which falls right before Memorial Day Weekend. In observance of this week and in preparation for Memorial Day Weekend, the best boat dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks wants to focus on some safe boating practices you can do to help make sure you have a fun and safe time boating this upcoming holiday weekend.

Before You Depart

Just like you would a car before a road trip, it's a good idea to ensure your boat is in proper working order before taking it out onto the water.
  • Check fuel levels.
  • Check engine for leakage, excess water or heavy odors, as these could be signs of a serious issue.
  • Ensure all lights are functioning and check for any electrical issues.
  • Test all communication devices.
  • Run the blowers to evacuate fumes and vapors from the bilge.
  • Use a floating bobber for your boat and car keys in case they go overboard.
  • Make your plans known. Before taking off, share your plans with friends or family. Include your destination and expected return time. You should also check the local weather, water reports, and boating forecasts. Don't head out if there will be bad weather.

While Out on The Lake

In addition to making sure your boat is in proper working condition, it's important to make sure everyone on board follows safety precautions. Whether you are the driver or just along for the ride, everyone plays an important role in boating safety.
  • Don't exceed the number of passengers allowed on your watercraft.
  • Ensure the engine is shut off while passengers are loading and unloading, especially during activities like tubing, water skiing, wakeboarding, and swimming.
  • Ensure there are enough life jackets for everyone on board. Always wear your life jacket while tubing, water skiing, and wakeboarding. Children should wear their life jacket at all times.
  • Don't drink and drive. If you do decide to consume alcohol while boating, ensure there is a sober driver.
  • To reduce the chance of falling out of the watercraft, ensure all passengers remain seated while the boat is in motion.

National Safe Boating Week Starts Saturday

Summertime at the Lake of the Ozarks is full of days spent out on the lake boating. The best boat dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks knows that with boating comes great responsibility. You can ensure your trip is fun and accident-free by following proper boating safety measures. National Safe Boating Week is observed May 19th – 25th, 2018. The National Weather Service has partnered with the National Safe Boating Council to help promote safe boating practices. In observance of National Safe Boating Week, Iguana Boat Sales wants to emphasize these things that could save your life the next time you and your family are out on the water:

Do Not Boat Under the Influence

The effects of alcohol while operating a watercraft can be even more hazardous on the water than on land. Boating under the influence (BUI) of drugs or alcohol affects judgment, vision, balance, and coordination. These impairments can increase the risk of being in a boating accident, which could cause harm to any passengers and the boat operator. Alcohol contributes to a third of all recreational boating fatalities.

Always Pay Attention to the Weather Forecast

Weather conditions can change suddenly, catching boaters off guard and creating hazardous conditions. Boaters should take particular note of any current weather advisories, storm warnings, high winds, as well as pay attention to the extended forecast. It’s important to never go out on the water if there’s a chance for severe weather.

Wear Your Life Jacket

Wearing a life jacket is one of the most effective and simple life-saving strategies for safe recreational boating. Boats are required to have on board a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket for every passenger on their watercraft.  Today, life jackets come in many sizes, are lightweight, and comfortable for any boating activity. Children should ALWAYS be wearing a life jacket when on a boat, whether the boat is moving or not.

Have a Fire Extinguisher on Board Your Vessel

Boats are required to carry U.S. Coast Guard approved, marine-type fire extinguishers, in case of a fire from the engines or the fuel system. The boater shouldn't have to travel more than half the length of their boat to reach the fire extinguisher. Fire extinguishers should be inspected by the boater to ensure they are properly charged, stored, and undamaged.

Thunderstorm Safety

Thunderstorms can be frightening to a boat operator and its passengers. They develop suddenly and bring strong, gusty winds, lightning, and torrential downpours, which can turn a pleasurable day on the lake into a nightmare. All thunderstorms generally produce lightning and a strike to a vessel can be catastrophic, especially if it results in a fire or a loss of electronics. If your boat doesn't have a cabin, stay as low as you can in your boat. If thunderstorms are a possibility, stay in - waiting it out is better than riding it out in a storm.

Safety Tips For Boating With Your Furry Family Members

Summer is just around the corner and days and weekends will be spent out on the Lake. Iguana Boat Sales knows that there is nothing better than spending the day out on the water, except maybe being able to bring your furry companion along with you. Most dogs enjoy the water – unless that water is used for a bath! Dogs have become part of the family, and while we want to bring them with us everywhere, we also want to make sure they are safe. If you do bring your pup with you out on the water, keep in mind these safety tips from the best boat dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks to ensure a fun-filled day of boating.

Invest in a Canine Life Jacket

Most boating stores and pet shops sell life vests for dogs. Although dogs know how to swim, fatigue can cause even the most experienced dogs to drown. Even if your dog doesn’t go swimming, having a life jacket on them is a good idea in case they go overboard.

Have a Plan in Place in Case They Go Overboard

Accidents happen, so have a plan in case your dog falls overboard or even jumps off the boat. Make sure everyone on board knows what the plan is to save time in case you have to put it into action.

Bring Sunscreen

Just like we need sunscreen, some dogs need sunscreen as well. Short haired breeds, such as boxers or any light-haired dog, needs protection from the sun. You can also find sun hats and even sunglasses to help keep your dog protected.

Be Prepared for Accidents

Your dog is going to need a place to relieve himself. If you plan on being out in the water for any length of time, bring lots of paper towels, pet waste bags, and cleaning products. Also, be prepared that your dog may become seasick, especially if they are new to boating.

Bring a First Aid Kit

Make sure you bring a stocked first aid kit with you, not only for yourself but for your pet as well. The Humane Society has a list of items that you should keep in your pet’s first-aid kit at all times. If your dog is on any medication, do not forget to bring those out with you too.

Keep Your Dog Hydrated

It is important to make sure your dog does not overheat by making sure they have plenty of water. Be sure there is also a place available where they can get some shade.

Keep Their First Time Short

It is a good idea to keep your dog’s first boat outing brief so they are able to get used to being out on the water. If they do become seasick, talk to your vet to see if there is something that can help them out on future trips.

Visit the Boat Before Going Out

If your dog is new to the boating world, have them visit the boat before taking off onto the water. It would be a good idea to bring a toy or blanket they use frequently so they have something familiar with them.

Use Your Best Judgement

Always use common sense when your dog is on board. Block off areas that are slippery, where your dog could fall. Always know where your dog is at while on board, so you are aware if he needs your help.

Bring Your Dog Boating This Summer

Boating with your pups can make the experience even more enjoyable, but it is important that you keep them safe while on the water. If you are looking for a boat – new or previously used – come to the best boat dealer at the Lake of the Ozarks. Iguana Boat Sales has the perfect boat to meet all your needs.
